Intravenous Fluid Therapy (IVF)

Intravenous fluid therapy ( IVF) is commonly used in anaesthetised patients to help maintain circulating blood volume, support blood pressure and preserve tissue perfusion. The most common fluid we use is isotonic crystalloids such as Hartmanns or 0.9% saline. Anaesthetic agents can cause vasodilation, myocardial depression and a decrease in blood pressure and IVF help to counteract these effects.

Our surgical patients are typically run at fluid rates of 2-5mls/kg/hr. High fluid boluses are indicated when there is low blood pressure, blood loss, dehydration, sepsis or shock states. Lower IVF rates are considered in patients with heart disease, sometimes renal disease and very small patients.

We recommend IVF for any patient undergoing an anaesthetic, especially in geriatric patients and those with comorbidities. On the consent form you can tick for IVF or just discuss with your vet. Your pet will remain on IVF through until discharge.
