McMaster & Heap Veterinary Practice uses a handheld ECG device that allows us to assess lead II of an ECG trace in both dogs and cats. The unit clips onto an iPhone, and we simply place it over your pet’s heart on the left side of their chest. Pets can stand or lie down comfortably, and the only preparation needed is lightly wetting the coat with a small amount of alcohol. There is no clipping and no restraint required.
The device records an electrical trace of the heart for 1–5 minutes, which we can then print and review. It provides a simple, accurate way to assess heart rate and rhythm, helping us quickly identify abnormalities and monitor ongoing heart conditions.
